White Privilege in a community

  1. What examples have I witnessed of White Privilege in my community/immediate surroundings?

I have witnessed white privilege in the airport when it took less time for the immigration staff to clear a white person who was Australian than the time I was cleared. I felt discriminated by this behavior by the immigration staff. I think that things could have been a bit better at Airports than they currently are.

  1. Is White Privilege the same thing as racism? Why/why not?

I have a mixed approach to this question. I cannot completely draw a line between what is racism and what is not. For example if a white person comes to my country and community, he/she would also be treated differently. Should it be called racism? I don’t know. I think that each person is identified to a certain religious or ethnical background and this becomes a part of who we are. So we do show a little bit of preference to the people who are identified to us in some way. Should it be called racism? I am not so sure about it.

  1. How do I create more awareness around White Privilege?

Creating awareness around white privilege is a subjective matter. For example It’s not that I have to reach out to white people and/or authorities and ask for my rights and create a situation of us vs them. The efficient way to do is to get closer to white people and understand their culture and behavior. Don’t be judgmental. Talk to them about your concerns. Learn about their concerns and gradually move in a positive direction.
