In a local or national newspaper, find an article about a topic related to business ethics. Read the article. Then, write 3–5 paragraphs that answer one of the following questions:

I found an article online that was about the right to privacy in the Virginia workplace. The article spoke about different laws that were passed down that allow employee monitoring. In Virginia, it is legal for employers to monitor those who work for them through their technology screening (Legal Insider, 2016). Most organizations have an IT team who sift through emails, or internet history occasionally to monitor employees. Therefore, many employers tell people ahead of time not to use work computers for personal things, because they are monitored.

The article then went on to explain a couple other ways that employees are monitored in the workplace, like recorded phone calls (Legal Insider, 2016). In Virginia, it is legal to have all an employee’s phone calls to be recorded for work purposes, and “quality control.” The article also explained that many organizations have security cameras that monitor employees. The courts have upheld the right for organizations to install small cameras to monitor employees.

Personally, I believe that employees should have some right to privacy but not total privacy because they are using the company’s technology, and work space. If companies would like to monitor employees by tracking their phone calls, internet history, and emails I believe that they should be allowed to. However, I do not think that the cameras are necessary. If employees know that they have cameras on them at all times it can become distracting and overwhelming. If an employee’s screenings all come back fine, there should not be a reason to dig deeper into the employees, unless they give reasons for that.
