Steps in Psychology Research

Steps in Psychology Research

STEP 1 – Select a researchable problem

The gender discrimination issues have been discussed in many details in the past years. The effects of the gender inequality at workplace have also been highlighted. The workplace is the place where the quality of the individual skills is to be determined based on their abilities and other skills but the gender difference cause difference in the reward earning and the main difference of compensation (Newman, 2014).

These differences are developed based on the perception of the meal and female both in the workplace. The male perception regarding the women is based on their gender entirely and sometime the male and female are judged different based on their genders even when they are appointed on the same position. The male are where thought to be aggressive, women are thought to be pushy, the male where are thought to be short temper, women are considered to be unable to control their emotions. In many cases the women are subjected because they base their judgments on second guesses and they are weak when it comes to taking heavy decisions quickly (Patel & Biswas, 2016). The women are forced in many cases as well when they are under the supervisor of male leader and need to survive in the male oriented environment. The emotional and physical effects are determined in the past but there is less education in the psychological aspects. The women are affected by the psychological perspectives as well. The current essay aims to find the effect of the perception of the workplace members on the women leadership and managerial capacity that effects their perception regarding their own value in the workplace (Eagly & Carli, 2007). The emotions, behaviors are triggered by the external environment and so are the psychological aspects that affect the women in the workplace. Many women show patterns of burnout and some show high dissatisfaction even when they are paid well, all because they find the discrimination level to be unjust and that affects their psychological health negatively. The current paper focuses on the psychological aspects of the gender discrimination and its impact on women self-worth perception. The following research question is to be discovered.

Do Women self-worth is affected by the perception of workplace in gender discrimination environment?

STEP 2 – Review the literature

The following literature is driven form the past studies that have covered the topic of gender discrimination and highlight three important aspects of the gender discrimination: leadership roles and women, women underrepresentation and the effects of the gender discrimination of mental and physical health of the women.

The first article reviewed is regarding the stereotyping on leadership role between men and women. The authors, Johnson, Murphy, Zewdie, & Reichard (2008), discuss that the gender leadership role are prominent determinant in the success factor of the men and women at work. The female leaders and male leaders are assessed based on their gender and this assessment often is different from both given the same set of skills. The leadership roles and the traits associated with the leadership role both in male and female are assessed and questioned. The article explores the concept of gender and leadership in depth using the quantitative approach on the sample of 131 students who provided answers on the leadership role of men and women in the management. The characteristic of the female and male leaders are collected. The findings indicted that the female are strongly inclined towards the sensitive behaviors while the female leader’s characteristics highlight the strength and tyranny. The female leaders and male leaders are also assessed in term so the expectation with their roles in the organization. The female leaders are expected to be both sensitive but also strong while the male leaders are only expected to be strong in decision making, management role and the handling of human resources and not sensitive. This shows that the discrimination of the female is asked on their soft nature and their way of handling and apposing problems and conflicts. The leader should be sensitive to his followers and to the organization. The concept of the integrity, emotional intelligence demand the leader to be sensitive and proactive while the perception only tags these traits of female leader. Still the traits of female leaders are not determined to be the judgment of who is the better leader, male or female.

The factors that lead to the psychological wellbeing are connected with the emotional health of the individual. In the current essay the female workplace wellbeing is discussed both in terms of physical and emotional factors. The emotion wellbeing of the individual determines how they perceive about themselves and how they are able to connect with the organization. The study conducted on the women perception and their emotional wellbeing as well as their physical wellbeing is conducted, using the longitudinal research approach. The findings of the article regarding the mental and physical health of the women in workplace shows that the women prior experiences and the health are not affected by the workplace discrimination though their health and emotional welling is effected by the discrimination negatively. The perception of discrimination affects the female regarding their abilities and processes the workplace effects on their work and performance. The emotional changes and the effects are also found go be negative. The female workers find themselves facing different emotional problems like loneliness, stress, anxiety, quick judgmental and the feeling of contact fear that causes their performance to decline and also cause them to be side lined to make sure they are not highlighted to be affected negatively by any happening in the workplace (Pavalko, Mossakowski, & Hamilton, 2003). All these factors affect the female workers ability to judge their own abilities and target higher targets that they are able to achieve because of the experiences and skills.

The aspect of physical health and the emotional wellbeing are also concerned when it comes to women discrimination at work. The women sense of safety determines their self-worth clearly. The women who are harassed at work pace tend to show patterns of mental and emotional imbalance. These females are targeted because they are thought to be weak. Without the proper support from the workplace and the leadership these women also face long term threats and harassments form their workplace members. The article, authored by Berdahl, J. L., & Moore, (2006) focusing on the minority double gender discrimination effect in terms of harassment and minority discrimination has been conducted to learn that the women experience more sexual harassment at work then men and the ethnic women face more harassment than majority groups that causes their performance and their productivity to decline, causing them to lag behind. The sense of insecurity, fear and the constant threat also develops in these females. With imbalance emotional and psychological health these women are unable to develop string connection with their organization and create better self- worth. The racial found these results using the quantitative approach. The data is collected from five organizations and in depth analysis is conducted to lend the pattern of sexual and ethnic harassments at the workplace. The article however, does not cover the aspects of the psychological and emotions linked with the employee sense of self-worth.

Based on the discussed literature the research is focused on the psychological aspects of the women, of which the self- worth is highlighted to determine how the idea of the workplace regarding the women in discrimination affects their self-worth and lead them to various outcomes or affect their performance and the urge to fight for equal position.

STEP 3 – Formulate a hypothesis

The following hypothesis is developed based on the past studies, their findings and their gaps for future research.

Hypothesis: Gender discrimination effects women self-worth perception

STEP 4 – Provide operational definitions

Gender Discrimination at work: the gender discrimination ate work is determined based on many factors including the recognition factors at workplace, the authority of the workplace, decision making authority f=given to male, reward system including towards the male, promotions given to males, female harassed and neglected at workplace, and women being discouraged and degraded by male in the workplace because they are considered unworthy for the promotion, better wages and other perks. The gender discrimination will be measured using the questions in a survey that will help understand the extent to which the discrimination is being exercised. Also the interviews will help explore other aspects of the gender discrimination. The respondents will be asked to give details on their perception regarding the workplace gender discrimination and how it affects their performance, their perception regarding their position in the workplace and their value.

Women self-worth: self-worth is defined in terms of the ability to assess personal skills and abilities and be content about them. The self-worth also is defined in term so the individual ability to assess the difference and have proper understanding of the gaps between where they are and where they expect themselves to be. The self-worth is connected with the perception of the individual with their workplace, the people and the authority that compensate them for their hard work and efforts. The self-worth is to be measured using the questioning survey that focuses on the relationship with the organization. Interest of the employees, the employee relationship with other and the sense of belongingness, safety and empowerment that allows the individual to be able to take decision to certain extent and use these skills to best of their own and organization advantage if they are considered. The respondents will be asked to provide details on their perception regarding their attachment the organization and how much the organization values them for their work and skill sand not their gender and how much the gender factor is involved in this measurement., also the respondents will provide the effects of the workplace perception on their performance, their idea of success and promotion or targets set in competition with male.

STEP 5 – Choose a research design

Research approach

The research approach used for this paper is quantitative in which the data will be collected from the sample and the analysis will be conducted. The quantitative approach is designed to test the hypothesis and determine if the hypothesis is accepted or rejected in the real environment settings. The data is collected from the real subjects who are accurately fit for the description into which the phenomenon is designed and selected.

Data collection and tools

The data collection will be done for all the variables. The variable will be assessed through survey questions that will cover the areas discussed in the definitions above as well as the literature support. The survey question will be loaded into the system to conduct analysis. The analysis will determine the inclination of the respondents to a certain statement that will be designed to cater a single aspect of the variable. For instance, the variance self- worth will be assessed though the perception of individual’s value in the workplace. The tools results will help determine if the hypothesis is true or not.

Benefits of chosen method

The benefits of the chosen method are that it is simple and conducted in the real environment. It is an extension of the research discussed in the past and in the current study to determine if actually the impact of the discussed phenomenon is real and how to determine and create better solutions for the issues highlighted.

Analysis

The analysis will include the details of demographics, employees at workplace in terms of their prominent skills, their experiences and education. The analysis will also include the correlation and the descriptive analysis to demine the direct relationship between the variables. The direct relationship determines the direction and the strength of the relationship between two variables.

Benefits of chosen method

The benefit of the chosen method is that the direct relationship will help determine if there is any relationship between two variables ad then how strong or weak it is. This will fall us back to the aspects that are covered. The aspects of each of the variable that who strong connection will call for further investigation and analysis that will help analyses more refined variables relationships.

Sample

The sample will be selected for the research approach. The sample selected for ach study is based on the phenomenon under study and the use of the sample. The sample will be interviewed to bring more variable refinement in the study. The survey will be conducted to determine the relationship between the variables. The sample will be selected based on the study and the elements of the study will be female works in the organization. The organization will be selected to be services industry in which the role of the individual is higher in terms of the product oriented organization where the final product determines the success. The criteria for the sample will be determined based on this basic information.

STEP 6 – Connect to concepts from the book

The current research is linked with the course work of the psychology in many ways. The main aspects are explored further and explained below.

Emotional and Behavioral aspects

The emotional and behaviors studied are linked with the human psychology. The aspects of the health of the psychology determine the actions through the behavioral aspects and the emotional capacity and sustainability. The psychology is the study of the human perception that deigns and conducts the actions created by the individual. The current study explores the effects and causes of the certain behaviors and emotes that are led and led to certain outcomes. The use of the research in this study also focuses on the concepts of the perception that are linked with emotional health and wellbeing of the individuals. The study of the sociology is discovered through the use of the perception linked with behavioral actions of turnover, burn out and stress leading to final outcomes of lower self- worth. The behavioral and the emotional capacity support by the work place is also linked with the study of human psychology as to how they react and act to and in certain ways that affects other’s perception and opinion.

Research Ethics

Research ethics is an essential topic for any research component conducted. The research ethics provide the guideline in order for the researchers to follow the pattern that help them create a valid and reliable source of knowledge that can be used and assessed without any issue. The research ethics covered in the source work suggest that the research conducted should be real and valid as well as conducted in the real life environment where the findings can be further explored and the assumptions can be created that satisfy the significance of the phenomenon. Also the research ethics suggests that the use of past studies should be done accurately. The accurate us of the past research work is through the study and analysis of the past research and developing further argument by properly citing and addressing the issues in the studies to help build theories and concepts that can help in further knowledge building.
