  1. Select a major psychological disorder and consult the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition. Explain this disorder using the DSM.

There are many psychological disorders that cause other behavioural and emotional disabilities. The psychological disorders are linked with human personality, behaviour and ability to respond to stimuli around them. These psychological disorders include Anxiety Disorders, Dissociative Disorders, Disruptive, Impulse-Control, Bipolar and Related Disorder, and Conduct Disorders, Feeding and Eating Disorders and Sleep disorder. The sleep disorder is the most common and is usually found linked with various reasons. The sleep disorder is defined as the interruption in sleep patterns that causes stress, fatigue, and also other emotional instability. The sleep disorder also causes reduce day time functionality which means that the person is not able to perform the task in the day fully and contribute as they usually do.

The sleep disorder has two types. The first one is defined in terms of the connection with other mental disorder and the second is defines in terms of the sleep order connecting with the general medical conditions being applied or removed. According to the latest edition of the DSM, there has been a lot of work done on the sleep disorder and it is defined as the coexisting conditions for each of the sleep-wake disorders. Through this definition the both factors of wake and sleep are covered that are triggered through medical conditions and other reasons. The APA explains that if the individual has sleep disorder then he required independent clinical attention. In addition to this the mental and any medical disorders if are present are to be acknowledged and treated with the interactive effect of the sleep disorder and other medical and mental disorders coexisting.

The sleep disorder is also linked with other behavioural disorder and stress. The person who suffers from sleep disorder usually end up stressed out of work because they are unable to work steadily with less sleep. In such cases the person also shows patterns of less connectivity or change of moods unsteadily. The person who is suffering from sleep disorder is sometimes also pointed out as lazy or weak while they are not. Such comments and pointing out effect their perception about themselves and they feel less connected. The perception regarding the self and the environment change from these who suffer from sleep disorder.

There are reason for the sleep disorder and dream less sleeps that are caused by trauma or other factor like the use of drugs that cause less sleep and fewer dreams. The reasons can also include the factors like routine that has previously made the person to follow the same pattern of wake and sleep and the body and mind is not able to accept changes any more (Drake, Roehrs, Richardson, Walsh & Roth, 2004).

  1. Explain treatments for the major psychological disorder you selected in question 10 using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition.

There are many therapies for sleep disorder discussed in the research material and DSM. The main therapies include the use of Cognitive therapy that helps remove the causes of disturbed sleep and reduce actors contributing to insomnia (Babson, Feldner & Badour, 2010). The other treatments include sleep hygiene factors that should be appropriate for the human body to sleep soundly and without an issue. This reduces the stressors and factors causing rapid ageing and stimulus causing sleep disorder.
