Description

The first group of freed slaves African Americans arrived in Samana, Dominic Republic in 1824 AD. The number of African Americans that came to Samana is estimated to be around 6000. At present, over 80% of Samana’s population is from the African American descent. There are many socio-cultural similarities between African American and African Latinos due to the fact that most of them emigrated from USA back in the 19th century. The African Americans brought English as their language and it is still understood and spoken by many in Samara. The African Americans also remained on their brand of Christian faith that they brought with them from USA.

In 1824, many groups of freed African American slaves migrated to different part of Latin American. Around 6000 ended up in Samana. All these freed slaves travelled from different parts of the USA to Philadelphia from where they left for different parts of Latin America including Samana. History records show that the freed slaves that arrived in Samana had 33 American Surnames. Some of them are William, Jones, Miller, Green and Anderson. These African Americans brought Baseball to Samana and still play this American game. 80% of the present population of Samana consists of the descents of the freed African American salves that came here in 1824.
