What specific group does this commercial target?

Chapter 10 discusses the influence groups have on its members including opinions, attitudes, and behaviors.  For this assignment you will provide three web/television commercial links that appeal to a specific group. In a word document, provide the links and briefly answer the following questions about each commercial:

  1. What specific group does this commercial target?
  2. Do you identify with this group?
  3. Is the product/service in the commercial a necessity or a luxury?
  4. Is the product/service in the commercial subject to strong or weak group influence?
  5. Does the commercial attempt to change attitudes or behavior?

What specific group does this commercial target?

I have selected three commercials that include; A MacDonald’s commercial to target blacks as an important segment of the society, A Invesco’s advertisement that shows a black man being more intelligent than its white customer and Samsung’s commercial to show the brighter sides of people as a human being rather than someone to belong with a particular group. All these commercials aimed at ditching the floating stereotypes about blacks in the society and address the group in a positive way.

Do you identify with this group?

I am not identified with this group but I do belong to a group that is neither black nor categorized as whites.

Is the product/service in the commercial a necessity or a luxury?

Products showed within these commercials primarily belong to necessity. The Invesco’s opportunity to make investment for a better opportunity is by no mean a luxury. Similarly MacDonald is a necessity for fast paced American life and it might be a luxury for other cultures but is a necessity in American society. Samsung S3 can be regarded as a luxury for those who don’t need a phone with such features but by most is a necessity.

Is the product/service in the commercial subject to strong or weak group influence?

The product subjects to a relatively weak group influence. However, all the commercials attempt to ditch the norms of the society and tried to present blacks as dependable, loveable, smart and equal American than any other society living in the country.

Does the commercial attempt to change attitudes or behavior?

Yes, the commercials attempt to change the behavior of the society to a great deal. It tries to make the American people realize that blacks are as American as another group living in the country. Similarly, it attempts to change the behavior of blacks by trying to show them the strengths and goods they have.
